John 16:13, “When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all the truth.”
Jesus made this promise initially to His disciples, but its substance reverberates throughout history from Pentecost until Jesus’ 2nd Coming. Church history, then, is the record of the Holy Spirit’s work of leading and guiding Jesus’ church into all truth.
In order to better understand and appreciate the work of the Holy Spirit throughout history, we are studying various influential historical figures, and especially each figure’s contribution to the church’s understanding of the Bible, the Trinity, the gospel, and Christian living. At the end of our brief tour of these influential figures, we plan to familiarize ourselves with the Westminster Assembly of divines which met in London, England in the 1640’s and produced the Westminster Confession of Faith, the Westminster Larger Catechism, and the Westminster Shorter Catechism. Then we will study the Westminster Shorter Catechism, with special attention given to examining its claims about what the Bible teaches.
